Evaluation of Surfactant-modified Zeolite for Control of Cryptosporidium and Giardia Species in Drinking Water

چکیده
Gastrointestinal infection due to biological contamination of drinking water supplies is a major health issue worldwide. Naturally occurring and inexpensive modified materials such as surfactant-modified zeolites (SMZ) have net positive surface charge, which may prove useful for adsorption of pathogens such as Cryptosporidium parvum and Giardia intestinales (lamblia). SMZ is engineered by modifying the concentration of surfactant hexadecyltrimethylammonium (HDTMA) on the surface of zeolite media. Two different SMZ formulations (cationic SMZ and hydrophobic SMZ) were engineered to develop the most effective media for pathogen removal from drinking water. In the laboratory, batch experiments of SMZ, raw zeolite, and sand were conducted to determine pathogen sorption to the media. Then, vertical columns packed with SMZ or zeolite material were used to evaluate pathogen transport. Tritium tracer tests were used to determine hydraulic properties of the materials. Evaluation of immunomagnetic separation and the sucrose flotation methods coupled with immunofluorescence or PCR for detection of Cryptosporidium and Giardia (oo)cysts in water samples
Introduction: Detection of Cryptosporidium and Giardia parasites in water samples is usually performed by US Environmental Protection Agency 1623 method. Nevertheless, the USEPA1623 method still need improvement, to prevent and control the water borne parasitic disease. Therefore, we undertook the present study. Materials and methods: Totally 48 surface water samples were collected. Four sampl...

The pollution of water environments is a challenging issue especially in developing countries. Contamination of drinking water with heavy metals has been reported in many parts of the world. Arsenic, chromium and lead are dangerous heavy metals and also common contaminants of drinking water. In this study, the capacity and performance of the surfactant-modified Sabzevar natural nanozeolite (SMS...
متن کاملEfficiency of Modified Zeolite with Cationic Surfactant Hexadecyltrimethylammonium Bromide in Removal of Diazinon from Aqueous Solutions
Background and purpose: Diazinon is one of the most widely used pesticides in agricultural pest control that pollutes water resources. The aim of this study was to evaluate the adsorption of diazinon from water by zeolite modified with cationic surfactant hexadecyltrimethyl ammonium bromide (HDTMA). Materials and methods: The amount of HDTMA surfactant used to modify the zeolite was one-fold E...
متن کاملGiardia and Cryptosporidium spp. in filtered drinking water supplies.
Giardia and Cryptosporidium levels were determined by using a combined immunofluorescence test for filtered drinking water samples collected from 66 surface water treatment plants in 14 states and 1 Canadian province. Giardia cysts were detected in 17% of the 83 filtered water effluents. Cryptosporidium oocysts, were observed in 27% of the drinking water samples. Overall, cysts or oocysts were ...
